Idea
March 14th, 2008 by saa1013
I have an idea for during regular class. Maybe we could have different groups, search about different things, that we need to know for a test. Then when a groups finds good information they can post it, and then there will be only a dozen of post about one thing, instead of a hundred. But, the only problem is, if one group doesn’t tell the right information or not enough, people not search on that subject will get confused.

The Arctic is feeling the effects the most. Average temperatures in Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia have risen at twice the global average, according to the multinational Arctic Climate Impact Assessment report compiled between 2000 and 2004. But in South Pole the opposite effect is occurring. Not even the most intelligent people can explain that, we really don’ know and were jumping to conclusions.

March 7th, 2008 by sillycat101
this is a picture of some tempuratures. Notice the average (the blue line) is a lot lower at times than the red line. But the blue line also goes up and gets warmer. It’s crazy, but i think this in a way proves that global warming is fake. The earth is supposed to be warming up.

Polar Bears are dying because of us
March 7th, 2008 by xoxbelloxo
Do you want to be the one killing polar bears? I didn’t think so. Stop global warming! The ice is melting because of us. Please stop denying this. I don’t want to be guilty of killing these wonderful creatures! Are you wondering what will happen if we don’t stop polluting, we will kill all polar animals and eventually all die too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Polar bears don’t pollute. Why are they dying from us then? They have to suffer because some people are too lazy to car pool or recycle. I wonder what happened to this polar bear family. They all probably died because the ice melted and they drowned.

You really don’t want to kill these cute animals. Wait, do YOU? If you said no STOP GLOBAL WARMING.

- xoxbelloxo comment please! If you are a skeptic how do you feel now? I would like to know your feelings on this blog.

Facts on Global Warming thanks to http://www.edf.org/article.cfm?contentID=3767
March 7th, 2008 by mgoblue1996
Some Quick Facts on Global Warming
- Global warming is an intensification of the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect refers to the natural system that keeps Earth warm enough to sustain life–this is a good thing. But an abundance of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere has been collecting in the atmosphere and effectively forming an additional heat blanket around the Earth. In other words, human activities are intensifying the greenhouse effect and moving the Earth’s temperature to dangerous levels.
- Weather and climate are different. Weather in a given area can fluctuate significantly from year to year regardless of whether or not the climate is changing. Climate, which refers to average weather conditions over a longer period of time (such as a few decades, at minimum), can show clearer signs of human-produced changes.
- Global warming refers to a warming of the average global temperature. It does not preclude cooling in some locations. In fact, if some locations are cooling while the globe is warming on average, it follows that there must be other areas that are warming even faster than the global average. This is precisely what is happening in the Arctic, where temperatures over the past few decades have risen twice as fast as the global average, with potentially disastrous consequences. Polar bears in the southern range, for instance, who hunt on sea ice, experience shorter hunting seasons now that sea ice melts earlier in the spring and freezes later in the fall. Read about these and other findings laid out in the recent eight-nation report, Impacts of a Warming Arctic.
- 2004 was the fourth warmest year on record. The 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1990.
- Record heat waves responsible for some 26,000 deaths battered Europe in the summer of 2003. The scorching temperatures caused over $16 billion in damages to agriculture and other industries. Global warming has already doubled the risk of such events, according to a paper in the scientific journal Nature.
- A massive ice shelf the size of Rhode Island broke off from Antarctica in 2002. Rapidly warming temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula were blamed for the loss of the Larsen B Ice Shelf.
- The melting of glaciers around the world have been contributing to sea level rise around the globe, which means damage to the United States’ booming coastal counties that are now home to more than half of the U.S. population.
-
HOW DOES GLOBAL WARMING OCCUR?
Light from the sun passes through the Earth’s atmosphere
and heats its surface. The Earth’s surface then
gives off heat, some of which is trapped in its atmosphere
by a blanket of greenhouse gases rather than
escaping into space, keeping the Earth warmer than it
otherwise would be. Most of this greenhouse effect is
natural, maintaining the Earth’s average temperature
at about 60°F (15°C). Without the natural greenhouse
effect, the Earth’s average temperature would be
closer to 0°F (-18°C). The atmospheric concentrations
of several greenhouse gases are rising as a result
of human activity. Carbon dioxide (CO
2), the mostimportant human-made greenhouse gas, is released
primarily by the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and
natural gas, thereby raising the concentration of carbon
dioxide by 30 percent since pre-industrial times

Look at the clean energy compared to the Global Warming Part.
Look how high the clean energy was in August! and see how much it has droped!
The co2 is taking over, and as you can see from the charts, there is no way that could have just been made from humans, but there is no way that could possibly be natural.
In my opinion, i think that global warming is both a Man-made thing, and a natural thing. We humans are speeding up the process. And if you don’t belive me, just look at the chart!

what you can do
The average US household generates over 45,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year, counting both household and transportation uses (assuming a single family home, and two cars)10. While most attention has been focused on the cars we drive, household emissions (through electricity, natural gas, etc…) are often at least as much as those given off by our cars. Of the 45,000 pounds above, 25,000 come from home-based energy consumption. So buying a hybrid car certainly helps, but so does making your home as energy-efficient as possible. Please try to conserve energy in your home by turning off as many lights as possible, and turning the TV or computer off after you are finished.

MEDIEVAL WARM PERIOD AND THE MINI ICE AGE
March 5th, 2008 by sillycat101
Look at the chart above, notice how it has the Medieval Warm period and the Mini Ice Age. Compare the two, then please read the article: From around 800 A.D. to 1200 or 1300, the globe warmed again considerably and civilization prospered. This warm era displays, although less distinctly, many of the same characteristics as the earlier period of clement weather. Virtually all of northern Europe, the British Isles, Scandinavia, Greenland, and
Iceland were considerably warmer than at present. The Mediterranean, the Near East, and North Africa, including the
Sahara, received more rainfall than they do today. During this period of the High Middle Ages, most of
North America also enjoyed better weather. In the early centuries of the epoch,
China experienced higher temperatures and a more clement climate. From Western Europe to China, East Asia, India, and the
Americas, mankind flourished as never before. This prosperous period collapsed at the end of the thirteenth century with the advent of the “Mini Ice Age” which, at its most frigid, produced temperatures in central England for January about 4.5deg.F colder than today. Although the climate fluctuated, periods of cold damp weather lasted until the early part of the nineteenth century. During the chilliest decades, 5 to 15 percent less rain fell in
Europe than does normally today; but, due to less evaporation because of the low temperatures, swampy conditions were more prevalent. As a result, in the fourteenth century the population explosion came to an abrupt halt; economic activity slowed; lives shortened as disease spread and diets deteriorated

Global warming is causing damage in many parts of the United States! In 2002, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon endured their worst wildfire seasons ever. The same year, drought created severe dust storms in Montana, Colorado and Kansas, and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in Texas, Montana and North Dakota. Since the early 1950s, snow accumulation has declined 60 percent and winter seasons have shortened in some areas of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. NOW DO YOU BELIEVE???????

This is the hockey stick graph, this is a graph without the medival warming period.
This is the graph with the medieval warming period.
As you can see the temperatures during the medeival warming period are similar to the ones now. I know it is little higher than the medieval warming period, that is the pollution part. But most of it is natural.

MEDIVAL WARMING PERIOD
March 5th, 2008 by sillycat101
The Medieval Warm Period was a time of warm climate in Europe. The warmest part of the Medieval Warm Period was from about 950 until 1100 A.D. The warm climate overlaps with a time of high solar activity called the Medieval Maximum. The Medieval Warm Period occurred before the Little Ice Age, a time of cool climate in Europe and other places around the world. Over the past 1000 years with temperatures during the Medieval Warm Period similar to the first part of the 20th Century, cooler temperatures during the Little Ice Age, and dramatic warming in recent decades. The Medieval Warm Period was likely cooler than the past few decades.
Kind of cool huhh? I wonder if this is real or not. Do they have actual proof? The problem is that we don’t know what the truth is and what isn’t.

consequences of global warming
March 5th, 2008 by elkrapids234
. Global warming is a complex phenomenon, and its full-scale impacts are hard to predict far in advance. But each year scientists learn more about how global warming is affecting the planet, and many agree that certain consequences are likely to occur if current trends continue. Among these:
- Melting glaciers, early snowmelt and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages in the American West.
- Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding on the Eastern seaboard, in Florida, and in other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico.
- Warmer sea surface temperatures will fuel more intense hurricanes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
- Forests, farms and cities will face troublesome new pests and more mosquito-borne diseases.
- Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction WE HAVE TO STOP POLLUTING!! THANK YOU FOR READING!

Is it proven fact, or just conventional wisdom?
March 5th, 2008 by kkyla07
That is a very debated question. While most of us is picking sides of the fence and I as a skeptic are too. Our research is a never ending job and we shall not make our future decisions yet. Many things can still come into play. I know that in Antarcia ice is accumalating that isn’t an opinion that’s fact. What we need to find out is why is it accumalating in one place and the opposite is occurring in another. Overall, always keep an open mind!

climate change
March 5th, 2008 by elkrapids234
Once, all climate changes occurred naturally. However, during the Industrial Revolution, we began altering our climate and environment through agricultural and industrial practices. The Industrial Revolution was a time when people began using machines to make life easier. It started more than 200 years ago and changed the way humans live. Before the Industrial Revolution, human activity released very few gases into the atmosphere, but now through population growth, fossil fuel burning, and deforestation, we are affecting the mixture of gases in the atmosphere.

Most scientists say that global warming is not only real, but is already contributing to extreme droughts, floods and the melting of the polar ice caps. But a few scientists still insist the idea is bunk. With the Kyoto Protocol about to come into force, Melissa Fyfe investigates the doubters, their financial backers and whether they are worth listening to.

More on global warming
March 5th, 2008 by elkrapids234
I think cutting down the rainforest is BAD!!!! I think that it is hurting our enviroment a lot. Because as plants grow they breathe in CO2 and don’t breathe it back out. That really helps, but now that we are cutting down so many of them that contributes a lot to the CO2 problem.

THE EARTH IS WARMING UP! Wether we like it or not, the earth is warming!
March 4th, 2008 by sillycat101
Please read this article!
CO2 is building up in the atmosphere at a much greater rate. Several factors contribute to this build up. The use of fossil fuels in internal combustion engines and in the generation of electricity has greatly increased the amount of CO2 released to the air. Green plants remove CO2 from the air during photosynthesis and turn it into O2. Deforestation of large areas, especially the rain forests in tropical regions of the world, has decreased the amount of CO2 removed from the atmosphere by plants.
As you can see, we may not be making global wraming, but this scientists have proved, we are helping it along. We need to do somthing what are some things we can do?????

The green house effect
February 28th, 2008 by moss49
The greenhouse effect is a kind of shield that lets the sun’s heat in to the planet but traps it in so the planet heats. This is bad because it makes stronger hurricanes and melts glaciers we need for water. It is caused by our CO2 emissions. If we don’t stop polluting we could die. This is my opinion on the green house effect.

The Greenhouse Effect
February 28th, 2008 by mariner10
Earth and Venus are the only planets in our solar system that have the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is caused by our atmosphere trapping gases and heating Earth, giving it a steady temperature. The greenhouse effect is the reason that Venus is hotter than Mercury. Believers in man-made global warming think that trapped gases caused by the greenhouse effect are part of the reason of global warming. I do not. I think that the greenhouse effect has a very minimal or no effect on the subject because if you know your facts, you’ll know that the ice caps in South America are getting bigger. How could this happen if the Earth was supposedly “heating up?”

Global Warming: Is It Man-made?
February 27th, 2008 by mariner10
I believe, along with many other scientists, that global warming is not man-made. It is too early to say we’re causing this! I believe that the Earth’s heating is natural. Over thousands of years ago the Earth’s temperature went into a virtual ditch that may have been the lowest point of temperature averaging. Earth has been going in and out of ice ages constantly for millions of years. In South America the ice caps are getting bigger! This is why I believe that global warming is a natural cycle.
By the way, the people who believe global warming is natural aren’t called skeptics. The “man-made” believers are sometimes called skeptics to the people who think global warming is natural!

What I Think About Blogging
February 27th, 2008 by mariner10
Blogging is very fun and exciting, especially when you want to see what other people are posting or commenting about. Unfortunately we are not very far in blogging, so there aren’t many posts and comments. It hink blogging is a great way to get an opinion out to everyone else on the internet. It’s great that we can just post, (as long as we have confirmation from the administrator), and comment easily. I think class with blogging is equal to a regular class because we can just look at other blogs and comment, but we miss out on the fun experiments.
